Drum Lessons

Would you or your child like to learn the Drums? Our drum lessons are tailored to each student’s learning style and taught by experienced and qualified teachers at our Newcastle Music Studio. Beginner to expert lessons available to fit your current ability in a professional inspiring environment.

Our Drum Philosophy

Our drum students not only have a great time learning to keep time, but they also learn the distinct techniques involved in playing the drums so they can move freely and efficiently, all while avoiding injury.

Drumming is the most physical of instruments, and like athletes, drummers perform at their best when they are relaxed and moving fluidly.

Most of all, our drum lessons are about experiencing the sheer joy and fulfilment of playing the drums¹. We will help you navigate your favourite song, hone in on the unique and exciting theory and rudimental aspects involved in drumming, and most of all, we will support and encourage you as you find your own creative outlet on the kit.

Learning to drum is hands on and all about trial and error. That’s why our drum lessons are tailored towards each student’s own unique learning style from:

  • visual learning (like reading notation).

  • auditory learning (like ear training).

  • kinaesthetic or tactile learning.

Why should you learn the drums?

  • Drumming has been proven to release stress¹. It makes sense! Feeling frustrated or disappointed? Pick up some bits of timber and hit some things. Drumming is known to release endorphins and improve your mood and wellbeing.

  • Playing the drums involves coordinating all four limbs and it’s because of this that drumming engages both sides of the brain. This improves cognitive ability, especially in subjects like maths, as drumming is all about timing and fractions.

  • Drumming is known to assist in releasing emotional trauma. The process of drumming can have a positive effect on fatigue, depression, anxiety and behavioural issues. Drumming is also able to assist children in improving their focus and concentration levels.

  • Drumming can help you get in touch with your emotional state and allow you to develop your own creativity, resulting in a greater sense of self.

  • Drumming can make you build up a sweat and there's nothing quite like sweating out while doing something incredibly fun and full of adrenaline.

  • Lets face it, everyone is looking for a solid drummer, we reckon there's about 10 guitarists to every drummer which makes drumming such a great opportunity to meet new people and explore the world!

  • Drumming allows you to be completely immersed in the moment. Distractions disappear and all that matters are those sticks in your hands and those drums underneath them.

  • Drumming is a fantastic tool for developing confidence. Percussion instruments are loud and they are commanding and everything in between. It’s because of this that the drums are a great tool for personal growth.

Our Teachers

Isaac Gibson drum tutor and teacher tunes drums in Woodriver Studios recording studio based in newcastle, NSW

Isaac

Isaac has been teaching drums consistently for over a decade and playing for over two decades. It was through his experience teaching at a young age that Isaac quickly realised how incredibly rewarding it can be to share his passion for drumming with others.

It’s with this passion and through his experience that Isaac has developed a highly effective, fun and involved approach to teaching the drums. With a mass of resources and experience at his fingertips, Isaac is able to break down the most complex concepts and enjoys focusing on advanced techniques, often coaching students through their HSC or tertiary exam preparation.

Isaac focuses on involving technology in his lessons as he knows videos and recordings can be a valuable asset for new and experienced students.

Isaac gets the most enjoyment from creating and performing original music and loves helping his students create their own music. You may catch him around town performing with his band Tired Minds and Puka Panther as well as numerous other projects.

What People Are Saying

Such awesome professionals! My daughter has been having drum tuition with Isaac for nearly a year and loves it. Isaac is the nicest guy and a gifted teacher. He is very caring, patient and encouraging. The student concert they put on prior to lockdown was amazing. What a great opportunity for the students. So pleased we found Woodriver Studios shortly after we moved into the area.

I started at woodriver studios about 3 years ago. At first I was a bit shy and I barely knew how to hold the sticks. Thanks to Isaac I now feel confident, and I have a ton of fun with my instrument. I've enjoyed getting to know Isaac and learning drums at my own pace. He's really flexible and there are no expectations aside from that you should come away knowing more than you did when you came
